Introduction

Welcome to Parents ASSIST (Advancing Supportive and Sexuality Inclusive Sex Talks)! We’re so excited to have you with us. The goal of this program is to help parents of gay and bisexual sons communicate with their children about sex and sexual health. Over the next five weeks, we’ll work together to learn about and practice communication strategies to build your confidence in having health discussions with your son. Below, you’ll find the two videos we covered this week and more info about the homework.

Key Points for Module 1

• People often think they don’t have much influence over teenagers’ behavior, but research consistently shows that parents do make a big difference in their lives.
• As a parent, you have a lot of power to help your son learn the skills needed to make good decisions.
• Coming out is not a one-time event; it’s a complex and lifelong process.
• It’s not unusual to feel lost or overwhelmed after an LGBTQ child comes out, but what’s most important is to communicate to your child love and acceptance. The rest of the learning can come later.
• If you ever said anything during the initial coming out conversation that you regret, it’s never too late to acknowledge that with your child. Admitting mistakes opens future opportunities for more family conversations.
