Module 2
Introduction
Welcome back to Parents ASSIST! Thank you for taking part in Session 2 of the program. This week, we discussed some barriers to talking with your children about sexuality and health and how to overcome them. Even if it doesn’t seem like it, your children want to know what you as their parent think about issues regarding sexual health. Below, you’ll find the two videos we covered in this week and more info about the homework.
Key Points for Module 2
- There are a lot of excuses that both parents and teens give for not talking about sex, and it’s important to find ways to overcome these barriers so you can give your son the info he needs.
- Both parents and teens may find it awkward to discuss about sex, but for most people, it’s just like any regular drive like experiencing hunger or thirst.
- LGBTQ teens are shown info about sex all the time. To avoid conflicting messages, it’s important they get accurate information about sexual health and wellness from the best possible source: YOU!
- The BRAVE technique is one strategy you can use to either answer your child’s questions about sex or for you to initiate these conversations:
- B: Breathe and calm your nerves before responding
- R: Repeat the question or topic at hand
- A: Acknowledge a range of beliefs
- V: Verify where your child stands
- E: Explain your thoughts and values clearly
