Module 5
Introduction
Welcome back to Parents ASSIST! Thank you so much for taking part over the last five sessions. By participating, you have made a real difference in the future of LGBTQ youth and their families. This week, we went in-depth on HIV and STI prevention and testing for LGBTQ youth. As parents, it’s important that each of you know what resources are available for your child to access the type of sexual health care they need. Below, you’ll find the two videos we covered this week and more info about the homework.
Key Points for Module 5
- HIV and many STIs can be prevented with barrier methods like condoms or medication. HIV can be prevented with PrEP, vaccines can protect against HPV and mpox, and DoxyPEP can prevent bacterial STIs like chlamydia.
- There are a variety of ways to get tested for HIV and STIs including using home testing kits, going to sexual health clinics, primary care offices, or your local health departments.
- Gay and bisexual youth may need to take separate steps than their heterosexual peers to protect their sexual health.
- Helping your son find and connect with an LGBTQ competent provider is a great way to empower him to take control of his health. Normalizing health-seeking behaviors at an early age leads to a lifetime of being a savvy healthcare consumer.
